Wondering what to expect when you sign up for one of my editing services? Here is a general breakdown of the process.
Step 1: Meet and Greet
Unless we’ve worked together before, I will schedule a time to talk to you about your project. This can be done over Google Meet, through text or email, or over the phone—whichever you prefer.
This introductory meeting is important to ensure we find the most useful service for your project and to help me understand your expectations and aspirations. For many services, I will ask you to send me a small sample of your writing so I can gauge the workload and ensure I give you an accurate quote for “per word” services.
Step 2: Sign the Contract
Once you have decided on a service, I will send you a contract to sign. You can see a preview of the contract here.
This contract goes over when and how payments will be made, ensures that any material you provide to me remains your property, and discusses the pertinent details of our service agreement (how many words, type of editing to be completed, time frame, etc.).
Step 3: Complete the First Payment
For all “per word” services, a payment equal to 50% of the total is due once the contract is signed. I accept all payments through PayPal. (Don’t worry, you can use the PayPal link to pay with a credit card—no PayPal account required.)
For package services (Frist Pages Review, Submission Packet Review, etc.) and any “per word” service under 5,000 words, the full payment will be due up front. This is just easier since the timeframe to completion for these projects tends to be fairly short.
Step 4: Send Me Your Material
Once the payment is processed, you will send me your pages via email. I prefer Word Docs but also accept Google Docs, if that’s your preference.
Step 5: Editing Begins
For packages and smaller projects, you can expect a fairly quick turn around (which we will discuss during that initial conversation). For longer projects, I will check in with you once per week to let you know of my progress. In almost all cases, I will complete the project before our discussed deadline, but if for any reason there is a delay in getting work done, you will be the first to know.
I pride myself on clear and frequent communication, so you never have to worry about being ghosted.
I complete copy and line editing using Track Changes in Word or Suggesting Mode in Google Docs. This allows you to go through and accept or reject edits.
Developmental and large-picture edits are completed using the comment function and are discussed in the summary breakdown included with these services.
Step 6: Final Payment Is Due Once Editing Is Complete
Once I’m finished with the project, I will email you the marked-up documents along with any summary pages included with the service. Any outstanding payments are due at this time.
If you have any follow up questions or concerns about your pages, I’m happy to schedule a free 15-minute meeting to discuss them. I also provide more in-depth coaching that can be purchased as a separate service.
